Are Women Safe?

Gandhiji once told that "India will get its real independence only when a women can walk on the street alone at midnight without fear"...Leave midnight,i think, if she can walk alone in the day without fear , that itself is great news...Nowadays the rape and murder of women has increased.... Women do not feel safe/Confident to go out in the day itself...Women are experiencing a lot of eve teasing especially in buses...The horrific rape and murder of a call centre employee, Prathiba Murthy, by a taxi driver in Bangalore last month gave shivers to women who work in the BPO sector...As more and more women are becoming educated and financially independent, the crimes againt women is also rising....It is a matter of real shame..This is creating some kind of insecurity among women...Everyday we read in the newspaper so many crimes against her like rape, murder, sexual harrassment and eve teasing....These are only the reported ones, god only knows how many of them goes unreported....All this made me think about this topic "Are Indian women safe?....Are Indian men so starved?....Does anyone have any precautions or solutions???????

Some tips
> *please note down the taxi or auto number when you are travelling and keep on updating the information about your wherabouts to your close friends or relatives through your mobile.
> Dont entertain strangers at all, no matter what reason they give.
> Never ask for a lift or give lift to strangers.
> If u experience any kind of harrassment dont keep quite, report to the higher authorities immideately or take action urself if it is getting worse.
> Always keep in mind that your safety is in your hands and dont wait for others to come and help. so take smart decisions.

I would like to add another point here:
I have seen this many times when travelling in a crowded BTS bus. The men (aged between 35-50) in the bus misbehave with ladies, like, falling purposefully, touching in private areas and pretneding as though it was not intentional,... . Unfortunately, most of the ladies do not slap them back or scold them. They just move front and keep quiet. I don't think so, we, the ladies are doing the right thing by moving away from them. Because, if not lady X, they will do it with the other lady. So, please retaliate back immediately. It's high time that we come up in front and teach them a lesson. How long can we suffer. We should learn to stand for ourselves in this cruel society and make our life happy. If not, we'l be the sufferrer.
Let's make it a point to see that we don't suffer and let other's take plesure in our sufferings. Wake Up!!!

well said....i completely agree with you....women should retaliate back when they come across this situation....even i have experienced a lot of misbehavior (especially old people) in buses and crowded places....i used to be quite and just tell them to move back..but now i have learnt a lesson that by being silent you are encouraging them...no more I keep quite...i give back then and there itself....recently a guy dashed me purposely, i was irritated so much that i scolded him very badly and he ran away from there.....in my 2 years stay in Bangkok i have never ever experienced even a single incident like this....i dont know why men over here behave like this....first they should learn to respect women...and when women face any kind of misbehavior against her, she should take action herself.

yes anitha I do agree with you..the more women stepping out of the house, more they are being harrassed...
Recent incidents are showing that although so much voice has been raised for women empowerment or Nari mukti yet condition is pathetic. Rape with a model in Mumbai, one after another gang rapes happening in trains.....where is she safe..what about the people who are eye witness of these incidents but they stay quite....leave about common men..when the security guards themselves indulge in these crimes..can take the recent example of medical students being harrased by military guards in a train....Always there is a chaos for some time when the incident happens..it becomes a breaking news or headlines of the day- but after some time no body even bothers that where are those criminals???
and victims are just left to live in shame and trauma for rest of their lives........there shouldn't be any mercy given to such criminals...why don't they are hanged to death ...so that atleast some one would give a thought before involving himself in such crime...but probably our laws, politicians and so called influent people never let this happen..as they themselves would face the trouble...

I think the Indian society is one with fake values, and highly hypocrytic...India is a place where women are worshipped(in theory) and women dont have enough security to be on her own(in practice) .... Indian women are supposed to be treated as godesses(in theory) , but in practice, women generally means an all in one machine( washing , cooking , dishwasher ,servant ++++)

what i think is that; women cannot expect anything from society. Our society is blind, deaf to what they see and hear but are vocally extravagent...The emanicipation of women lies among you people itself...The guts to stand up for your self...Do not even dream of being bestowed with independence, freedom and respect by men... you have to fight and earn for yourself...and at the same time support your fellow ppl , not bowing to society at large...well society matters, but what if the values held by the society are fake and is practiced hypocrisy.
The key I repeat is to stand for your self and support everyone who is doing the same....( warn you; in a country of deaf n dumb people with no memory, cost can be high...)

This is a burning issue, but as we delve deeper the answers simply evade us. Women have never been safe in India and our Capital Delhi has been aptly named as "Rape Capital". In 2005 alone there were a total of 645 registered rape cases in and around Delhi, that adds up to around 2 every day, and then what about the unregistered cases. Let's face it guys, its the very upbringing and societal values that we boast of, which lead to these heinous crimes being committed. For example, female foeticide, wherein the girl child is killed the very moment they are brought forth into this world, educated parents giving their son's and daughters access to world class education, but then its these parents who connive with their sons to demand huge sum's in dowry.
Even after 50 years of Independence , nothing has changed, we can talk about the mindset of people, or rather a certain section of the society which is responsible for these acts. But in retrospective , most of the tracks lead back to us. I agree with winson lets stop being hypocrites and lead from the front.
A country where the men do not have respect for women,is surely headed for doomsday.
