10 Rupees!!!

Recently i took an Auto from Garuda mall to St.Jones.When the autowalla started, the meter showed 10 Rs.When I reached St.Johns the meter charge was 28 bucks so i gave him 30 as minimum charge was 12 and he had started off with 10 Rs.But to my surprise he started asking 10 Rs more.I was a bit confused.I checked the meter again and it showed exactly 28.I argued with him that it is exactly 30 if the minimum charge is 12.Dont know what logic he was using, he just went on asking me to give him 10 more Rs.As i was in a hurry and was in no mood to fight i gave him 40 bucks eventough i knew that he was cheating me.when i got into the bus my consious was telling me that i did a wrong thing by giving up.My mind was spinning with a lot of ways that i would have handled the situation.I really got angry on myself as many times i let go things like this and i know that by doing this i am encouraging ppl like him. This is not the first time i have experienced this.According to me out of 10 people, 6 belong to this category. There are some auto drivers who are of helping nature, they help u when u are in trouble and they do not demand anything extra and sometimes they refuse to take even when u give them.I respect those people.Eventhough it is a matter of 10 bucks i felt that if i would have given that money to someone who really needs it like a disabled person it would have made a big difference to him atleast for that day.I really dont know how much he would have earned like this by cheating ppl.As a person who respect money i have realised my stupidity and have decided not to give up next time when i face this situation.

Hmm... Stop, Think, Proceed. If you had asked him the reason or had you given a clear explanation to him, the problem would have solved. The autovala doesn't calculate to the exact amount. He also wanted to ensure that he doesn't charge you lesser. But you could have applied a clean thinking. While in hurry, thatz not possible..

Actually ani, both the figures 30 and 40 are wrong. The minimum fare is for 2kms. Earlier it was 10 and now it's 12. Hence 6 Rs per km. The metre showed 28rs. so u have travelled 5.8 kms. The new fare of 6rs p km anounts to 33.6Rs. You should have given 35 bucks, ended up giving 5 more. Oh.. wat a calculation.. shld have applied when I took up CAT.

This post cld be a quants question for CAT aspirants.. :)

hey Kriz hold on..i dont agree totally with u dear..first of all,the autowalla would have updated his meter according to the new rule..good that i saw the meter in the biggining itself where it showed 10 bucks..what if i dint see???..its not my problem..As a commom man i will pay only the amount that shows in the meter bcoz thats the right thing..i have my explanation..plz spare some time to read it

its not that the minimum fare is incrased.. The decision to retain the minimum distance as two kilometres was taken after there was confusion in the revised minimum fare being Rs 10 even after calibration while the minimum distance was 1.6 km. so the revised minimum fare is Rs 12 for a minimum distance of two kilometres.

so for 1.6km the fare is 10Rs
2Km the fare is 12Rs

so ur calculation goes wrong here..

One more thing Kris,if he would have showed me the fare conversion chart definitely i would have paid the exact amount..instead of that he just went on asking 10 Rs extra without any logic..so only i got angry!!

i think if i come to your words, meter should show the number of KMs travelled by the auto along with the fare ;)

recently i have travelled the same distance and the meter started with minimum 12 Rs and the meter showed exactly 30 when i reached St.Johns(keep in mind..he too followed the exact route)..

actually i am sure that he cheated bcoz i have travelled so many times in the same route as i go to a clinic bcoz of my appointment and always the meter shows 28-30 bucks..So there is no doubt that he cheated

i always appreciate people who are honest..Kriz Thanks a lot for ur calculation and input ;)

So many points to be noted here and some are little contradictory..

Let us crack them one by one...
1. U were saying that a common man would pay only for what is shown in the metre. Agreed. But you do not fall under that category as u were aware of the price hike :) ALso the govt has given them three months time to update the meter, but the fare sheet shld be shown.

2. I was stumped to find out that my arithmetic went wrong ;) but it seems we cannot arrive at an exact figure here. The two statements are contradictory. 1.6km for 10Rs comes to 6.25Rs/km against 2 km for 12Rs which amounts to 6Rs/km. Either way you should have given a minimum of 33.6 bucks as tld earlier.

3. Yes. Fare conversion sheet must be shown. Again u r not accepting one thing. You cld have also asked for the same :)

4. Autos displaying kms. Correct. No arguments here. Still the autovala has to afford to do that change and the govt doesn't mandate that :)

5. Finally, u have benchmarked with a revised auto meter and proved the autovala and me wrong. Gud and sorry to hear that u r on a regular visit to doctor. Wish u a speedy recovery.

I had a doubt whether u r a doctr. checked ur profile.. A staggering MBA!!! Gr8...

In my attempt to do a fair justice b/w u and the autovala, am not able to arrive at a conclusion. The mistake is on both the sides.

According to my calculation as per the meter 10 Rs/1.6 km,it comes to 6.25Rs/1Km ..

and as per new rule i.e., 12Rs/2Km it becomes 6Rs/1Km

in your calculation you have taken Rs5/Km instead of 6.25/1km and arrived at 5.6km travelled by the auto..

but according to me if the meter charge starts with Rs 10 then it will be 6.25Rs/km then i would have travelled 4.48 km as the meter charge is 28..

as per 12Rs/2km i would have travelled 4.66667Km..if its 6.25/1KM, then for 4.66667Km i should pay 29.1667..okie i would have paid either 29.50 or 30

i think this is the correct figure

i would have asked him the fare conversion sheet but i told u that i was in a hurry da and if he dont update and keeps asking for extra money like this one day he will end up in trouble for sure

hey kriz dont think that i am just pulling this matter..its just that i am also curious and found it interesting ;)

actually i gave him 30bucks even after the meter showed 28 as the minimum charge is 12 bucks..according to me that is the right amount

Kriz i just loved ur comments..they are too good ;)

The argument continues...

Now the mistake that you have spotted is in the distance calculation part.

Note that the autovala has not updated his meter. The earlier rates was 10 Rs for 2km and Rs5/km there on. When the old auto meter reads Rs 28 and hence it should be divided only by 5.

Am I rite?

hey let me correct..to my knowledge, the minimum cahrge of 10Rs is for 1.6Km and not for 2Km..

No No No...
Iam sure about the old rates. It is very simple 5Rs/km with a minimum of 10 Rs for 2kms da..

Guess it's time for ur next post..:)
